New Year resolutions often revolve around getting fitter, being happier, and building relationships. What if we told you that pet ownership can give you all of that and more? San Diego is a pet-forward city with plenty of pet health and lifestyle opportunities at your disposal. Here are three of our Colony Veterinary Hospital team’s favorite ways pet ownership can transform 2024—for you and your pet.

#1: A pet helps you lead a healthier lifestyle

Benefits for you: Exercise-focused resolutions always seem to fizzle out by February. But, with a pet by your side, getting fresh air and exercise is nearly unavoidable. With physical fitness deeply embedded in the San Diego culture, it’s hard for you and your pet to not stay physically fit year-round. Try out these ideas:

  • Head outdoors — It’s (almost) always sunny in San Diego. May gray and June gloom aside, San Diego rarely has bad weather. You and your pet can exercise outdoors, which is great for your mental health and provides your daily dose of Vitamin D. Just don’t forget your sunscreen!
  • Mix it up — San Diego has a versatile landscape so you can mix up your daily neighborhood walks with a beachfront jog or a local hike.
  • Stick to a routine — Consistent exercise is invaluable for your heart, and studies have shown a link between pet ownership and better heart health.

Benefits for your pet: Besides the inevitable potty breaks, your pet needs physical exercise as much as you do. Whether your pet needs a lot of exercise or is happy with a leisurely stroll, it’s important to build physical activity into their daily schedule. Fortunately, San Diego has many options to keep your pet active, such as:

  • Hiking trails — Head for the local trails if your pet needs a longer workout.
  • Beaches — Stroll along the shore with your pet. Let your pet get in the water, if they can swim (and you don’t mind the mess). We love Dog Beach Ocean Beach if your pet is off-leash trained.
  • Parks — There are many dog parks across the city, but for a general, pet-friendly park, we love Kate Sessions Park

#2: A pet helps you build relationships

Benefits for you: Making new friends can be challenging, but your pet can be a great ice-breaker. Pet ownership can open up a world of opportunities to join communities and meet new people who love their pets as much as you love yours. Here are a few ideas:

  • Enjoy a sporting event with your pet — San Diego’s Petco Park is completely dog-friendly, with a pet relief area, special turf and umbrellas to protect dogs from the heat, and more. A casual sporting event can be a great opportunity for you and your dog to make some friends.
  • Take your pet on a dinner date — Many cafes and restaurants welcome pets on their patio (or even inside). One of our favorite La Jolla jaunts, Barbarella, welcomes pups on their patio and offers a “ruffarella” menu just for them.
  • Schedule a pet playdate — San Diego has pet meet-ups around the city where pets and their owners can get together and build community.

Benefits for your pet: Socializing with other pets can be enjoyable for your furry friend. But, it’s important to remember that every pet is different—some might be nervous while others may become overly excited. If you’re going to paint the town with your pet, here are some things to consider:

  • Are your pet’s vaccinations up to date?
  • Is your pet comfortable in public places?
  • Does your pet feel comfortable around other pets?
  • Does your pet behave well around other pets?
  • Are you familiar with local off-leash rules and etiquette?

#3: A pet can provide mental health benefits

Benefits for you: Have you ever cuddled a pet after a long day and felt a rush of comfort? Research has linked cuddling your pet to the release of endorphins, or feel-good hormones. Pet ownership has been shown to consistently boost mood, decrease loneliness, reduce anxiety, and combat stress.

Benefits for your pet: Animals are loyal and love unconditionally—if you’ve ever been greeted at the door by a dog, you know exactly what we mean. Being cared for by a family who shows them love and affection is invaluable not only to your pet’s mental health but to their overall well-being and happiness.

Regular exercise, socialization, and veterinary care ensure your pet is happy and healthy, and are great ways to thank them for all the ways they enrich your life. If your pet is due for their next vet appointment, give us a call.
